Cards Speak At The Poker Table
One problem that often arises at home poker games is different interpretation of poker rules by different players. Although all players at your poker game are likely to know the basic rules, i.e. what hand beats what, some of the more obscure rules are not considered until the need arises, and then they are hotly debated. One question that often arises is, what happens if the poker player with the winning hand at showdown doesn’t recognize it as the winning hand? Do the other poker players, or the dealer, or the opponent in the hand have an obligation to the the player his hand wins? Is anyone obligated to identify the winning hand?
The answer to that question is where the “Cards Speak” rule comes from. Before a hand is tabled, it is governed by the one player per hand rule. Another player should not look at the hand, and they certainly shouldn’t offer advice as to how to play the hand, or if it is a winning hand. However, after a hand is tabled the cards speak for themselves. If a winning player doesn’t realize that he has a winning hand, every other player at the table has an obligation to point that out. As a casino you can usually count on the dealer to identify winning hands, but even then players should be willing to speak up if the dealer makes a mistake.
The Winning Hand Should Always Be Identified
Even if you are the opponent, you have an obligation to identify the winning hand once it is tabled. You would want someone to do the same for you. Where does that obligation end ? Here are the situations where cards do not speak, and if someone doesn’t realize they have the winning hand they are on their own
- The Hand Is Mucked – A mucked hand is dead. Period. It doesn’t matter if it was the winning hand two seconds before. If a hand is mucked before chips are awarded it has no claim to the pot.
- The Hand Isn’t Tabled – Cards only speak if the hand is tabled. If the hands is not shown face up on the table, then no one other than the hand owner should say anything about it. If a player doesn’t see his flush, and mucks his hand without tabling, his hand is dead. Even if a player gives someone else a peak at his cards, if he mucks without tabling the hand is dead. Furthermore, if Poker Player A gives Poker Player B a peak at his cards, Poker Player B can not tell Player A he has a winning hand unless and until Player A tables his hand.
Playing the “Cards Speak” rule is good poker. The casinos do it at their poker tables, and you should do it at your poker home games.
