Mucking A Winning Poker Hand

Home poker games are generally friendlier than poker games at a brick and mortar casino.  There is more chatting, laughing, and often more drinking.  Sometimes rules that are enforced at the casino are let to slide at a home poker game.  The result of that is often anger when a broken rule leads to a disagreement as to who should win a pot.

An Example

Here’s an example.  You are in a hand at a home poker game that one of your friends is hosting.  Another player is talking on his cell phone and not really paying attention to the game.  In a casino, there are generally no phones allowed at the table, but since it is a friendly game, you let it slide.   You have some callers preflop, and the flop comes and you bet.  Everyone folds around, and thinking you have won the pot, you throw your cards in then begin to collect your chips.  But here is the confusion, the player on the cell phone still had a live hand!  Maybe it was behind his chip stack and you didn’t see it, or maybe he was intentionally hiding it to mislead you.  What should happen?

Only a Live Hand Can Win

In the above scenario, the cell phone player wins the pot!  Only a player with a live poker hand can win a pot, and since yours is in the muck, he is the winner.  Whether by accident or design you lost a pot you should have won, so what should you do in the future?

First, if the player was breaking a rule about the cell phone, he should get a warning, but more importantly you need to protect your hand, even at a home game.

Your Cards Are The Receipt For The Pot

When a poker hand is concluded the action should be

You need cards to show you won the pot.  Never let go of them until you have the pot.    If the same scenario took place with another poker player pulling out his cards after you had scooped the pot, then he would be out of luck.   If you remember to protect your hand, and encourage others to do so at your poker home game, a lot of disputes can be avoided.
